Beautiful experience during the November Art Month in Fletcher Hollum, Ameland! People friendly and helpful. Clean! Food really delicios! We’ll miss it but definitely going back with pleasure!
The short version: book a different hotel. Trust me. Total garbage. The long version: the island is magical. The hotel is terrible. (Positive notes: The (English speaking) kitchen staff is friendly, smiling and that makes all the difference in any stay and at least the chef has some standards. It was the only thing that this place has going for it, that the food, although overpriced, was tasty. The hotel beds are good also, although cracky. The sauna is hot.) The (Dutch speaking) hotel staff is absolutely horrendous, where to begin... All old judgmental woman, sick of their own lives not finding a man that can take care for a woman, so they have to work until they are 70 and they become bitter and judgemental and take it out on a friendly couple that decided to spend their hard earned money on this place, absolutely annoying. The facts: Old cracking, noisy rooms and doors, old cracking, rusty, stinky bathrooms. Bathtub you can barely fit it, heavy, clunky doorkey, elevator that is barely working, swimming pool is cold and smells like a baby's diaper, can't roll your baggage trolly in or out without having to lift the front weel over the doorstep, road to the parking uneven so you are struggling with your baggage trolley, breakfast staff to lazy to clean another table so they tell you to sit where they put the cuttlery, not where you as a guest would like to sit and enjoy your breakfast, breakfast isn't cheap 17,50 a person for a croissant, scrambled egg, coffee and an apple. And they want you to pay it, even if you haven't had any breakfast. They want to take your money without them having provided the actual food for it. When I entered the hotel the first thing the present is the bill. We stayed 7 nights and they wanted me to pay 1100 euros right away. I haven't even seen the room yet. Policy or not, I'm not paying in advance. You don't trust your guests, thats your problem. I will pay after the service delivered like it should be. We ordered room service almost everyday, only after 3 days to have the most rudest old woman staff, (a terrible person called "Trieneke", beware of this annoying person) tell my when I wanted to place my dinner order that she "locked the room" and I first had to come down to the reception to pay the roomservice bill so far otherwise they wouldn't serve us. When I showed my frustration about the matter, she threatened to call the police?! Crazy. They wanted to keep me hostage through my hunger. Absolutely bizar. These people have zero idea of what service means. No communicational skills, low intelligence, overall terrible experience. I had to go down to reception, to discuss with the manager for 50 minutes that keeping a guest hostage though their hunger is utterly criminal. I refused to pay, demanded to be served my dinner and only by explaining if they didn't serve dinner I would cancel the remainder of my holiday the next morning and leave 100%. Who are they to think that they can control a guest like that. Finally the "manager" buckled and served dinner. No apologies, no understanding, only judgement. The next eveniwe encountered 3 people smoking right in front of the entry. When they finally moved so we could pass, the spoke some remarks at us. When later I wanted to mention that, I noticed all kinds of street looking individuals, all men, sitting and drinking at the hotel bar and behind the two gambling machines they have standing there. A day later I asked if they are hotel guest but it turns out, this hotel let's everybody in from the street to drink at the bar. These were not friendly looking men, more aggressive looking, out for trouble. Very uneasy for a guest. I noticed they sit there almost every night drinking. It made me unconformable to have a drink at the bar with my partner. This hotel is overpriced, overrated and should be avoided at all cost. You will regret your decision to book and stay here. Don't go is my opinion.
The Hotel is old and windows are dirty. However, the worst thing is that our rooms smelled like feces all day and night and we could only sleep with all windows open. After talking to a receptionist, she mentioned that the pipes are very old and do not get modernized. Although the island is beautiful, I would strongly recommend a different hotel.
