Herberg de Gouden Leeuw

BEWARE THE ROOM WITH THE BELLS We booked direct with this hotel. The room we were given seemed OK. However at 11.00pm we realised the church clock was going to ring noisily twice per hour, all night long so we had very little sleep. We talked to the receptionist and she confirmed that the bells were a problem. We explained that we had not been warned about the bells so we wished to check out. The manager was adamant that the clock ringing all night was not his problem and made us pay for two nights stay. We are very unhappy that he should think the money we paid him is more important than the reputation of his hotel. We should have been warned about the bells.

We had a room in one of the historic side-buildings. The way to our room led us through the bicycle shed, which we did not expect. The room itself had pretty high ceilings with nice interiors and decoration, but throughout our entire stay, we had a feeling that everything was damp and moist. The bedsheets, the towels, even the toilet tissue... The restaurant, on the other hand, was really nice. We had a quiet table and felt very welcome, even with our dog. The food was delicious and the staff was very attentive. Most probably, we would not return for the hotel - but surely for the restaurant! 😉

We stayed here a night and enjoyed this old and cozy restaurant and hotel, in this cute old little city. Lovely setup, both inside and out; all nicely done. Impressed with coffee, dinner and lunch, with nice service. The rooms don’t have air conditioning and with warm weather they get quite warm. We also found the room quite dark. But lovely bathroom and comfy beds. I had asked the hotel’s help with flowers for the room, and they did an amazing job for a fair price. Lovey service! Will be back, when it’s a bit cooler…
