We absolutely loved our stay at Fortaleza do Guincho: it felt like stepping into a movie. The hotel’s unique setting, perched above the ocean, offers breathtaking views and a sense of calm that’s hard to find. While it’s a bit removed from larger cities like Cascais, that seclusion was exactly what we were looking for. The staff were incredibly friendly and offered great local recommendations throughout our stay. Breakfast was a true highlight. Everything was homemade, fresh, and beautifully presented. The Michelin-starred restaurant on-site is a culinary experience in itself, not to be missed. Our room was clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated, perfectly in line with the hotel’s charming and historic atmosphere. The nearby beaches are easily accessible, and for a bit more adventure, bikes are available for rent, it takes about 30 minutes to cycle to Cascais along a scenic route. We will come back!
Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho is truly a magical place—an ideal spot to come/go from for a Lisbon vacation. The coastal views are absolutely breathtaking and bring a sense of peace that’s hard to describe. The hotel itself, housed in a beautifully preserved 1700s fortress, feels like something out of a fairy tale. The property is both historic and charming, with a unique character that makes your stay unforgettable. The staff went above and beyond, with Victor & Alexander standing out for their warmth and attentiveness—always ready to help with any request and doing so with genuine care. Francisco did a great job in the casual dining room from food, wine selections to good conversations while making delicious after dinner cocktails. I highly recommend this incredible hotel for anyone looking to blend history, charm, and exceptional service in a stunning seaside setting. My wife was in Portugal/Spain for 3 weeks and she said our 10 day stay at Fortaleza do Guincho was her favorite experience.
I have never left a review before so this shows how frustrated I was with the place. My experience here was disappointing. I have stayed in many 5 star hotels and plenty of relais & chateaux ones that is why I was excited for this place. I was even fine with the hotel itself, given its old interior and low quality upkeep. It’s a shame because the historic architecture and location is charming. However, the service is not of 5 star or even 4. I don’t know how they even maintain this, maybe the Michelin restaurant helps. But they were disappointing in helping us when we realized we didn’t have cash to pay a taxi, that they called for us. I had asked if we could drive back to the hotel and they can cover it and they could charge it off as our expense for the stay. They refused and claimed it’s illegal- but I wouldn’t have asked them this had I not already had experience where hotels were willing to help when it came to transport and just billed me at the end. Mind you I already willingly paid extra for our room to have a better view, because the supposed room with sea view initially was a view of the parking lot and half with sea view. They said if we wanted a proper sea view it’s another upgraded room. So we decided we’ll pay extra. I guess they have to sell their poor view rooms somehow but this is deceiving and subpar. Other hotels I had stayed at were always willing to help and find solutions. This one did not. There was barely even people at the reception half the time. I couldn’t even reach them to connect me to room service. The waiters and other service people at the hotel were fine, it was more the management or head managers that failed this hotel. It does not deserve to be among the Relais& Chateaux group. It’s a shame because the place has potential but I must say this was a very poor experience. My last evening here was tainted and I can’t wait to leave.
