We stayed for 4 nights while touring the region. Super close to Hallstat (without the craziness). There is a small market nearby and restaurants. The hotel is great. Breakfast was absolutely delicious with a nice amount of options. The staff is absolutely incredible! The front desk staff was extremely helpful with planning our activities and answering our questions which we really appreciated. The waiters in the restaurant always greeted us with big smiles. Would definitely stay here again. Thank you!
Hôtel Sommerhof is nested close to the base of the mountains. One of the best places to go for a kids friendly vacation. Great location, good food and awesome kids menu. But the best part was the service. Each staff member at the hotel is very kind and humble. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Sommerhof. Thank you !!
Beautiful building and location but that's where the redeeming qualities end. We booked a room through a third party and were told by the hotel that each additional guest (there were 2 of us, so 1 "additional") would be subject to a fee of 120 Euros. I've been to dozens of hotels in multiple countries, booked both third party and direct, and have never once been charged a fee for having a second person in the room. This fee is not published anywhere and is essentially a hidden, slimy fee charged at the whims of the hotel. Hotel claims that had we booked direct there would have been no extra charge, which makes no sense either way, but something to keep in mind. If you order drinks from the inside bar, staff will hand you a tray full of glass cups to carry to the pool. I ended up dropping the tray because I'm not a server and have no experience carrying loaded trays. Upon telling the staff, one laughed and went to the back to remake the drinks (which they'll then charge you again for). No one asked where I dropped the tray, and while I tried my very best to clean up the mess, it's very likely there's still glass chips on the floor as I'm writing this review. A staff member brought out the drinks the second time and still managed to spill a rum and coke all over the pool chair as well as my shirt. Common courtesy, especially for a hotel at this price point, would be to not make guests carry their own drinks on trays, and at the very least to waive the charge on the spilled drinks if they're going to require guests to do that. Again another first - I've never been to a hotel in my life where I was required to carry a tray of drinks from the inside bar, through the dining room, out the door and up to the pool. With this, I expressed my dissatisfaction to the woman at the front desk. Not rudely but directly. Told her at this point I'd be writing an honest review, that would contain everything written here. Her only response was that this is how they've always done things and I'm the first guest to have these issues which to me sounds unbelievable but I wasn't interested in further pressing the issue at this point. Shortly after, the manager (also owner) of the hotel who I had spoken to on the phone during the check in process knocks on the room door, saying that I had been rude to her staff (directness is not rudeness) and that if we didn't like the hotel we could leave, to which I obliged should she reimburse every dollar paid ($400 CAD + the 120 Euro bogus fee). The interaction ended there. We did not partake in the included dinner nor breakfast as we felt uncomfortable in the hotel at this point. I know this hotel has generally positive reviews but based on my experience I would recommend everyone to avoid if possible. We had been in Austria for 10 days at this point and had nothing but exceptional experiences at all of our accommodations, so rest assured that there's places that will treat you like you're actually staying at a hotel that you paid for, and not like some fool to siphon money off of through fees and awful service.
