Kamenoi Hotel Okunikko

Location is deep in Nikko so it takes a lot to go up there. But the private bathtub and the hotel onsen were amazing. At night we saw deers while bathing and relaxing. The Autumn leaves were a special touch to the scene. Food was nice. Restaurant service staff was great. some front desk staff male receptionists were a bit moody.

Recently renovated hotel but I guess just the lobby area, the room looks old. Located in front of bus stop ( convenient ) and lake ( pretty nature scenery and mountains of greenery ) . We saw friendly deer roaming in front of the hotel. We bought room package with dinner and breakfast buffet which is more convenient after long day around Nikko. Food is decent , a lot of variety but lack explanation in English translation. Your option for the room is either western mattress room without bathroom or japanese floor tatami room with bathroom. We got a 3 beds western room and there is this doraemon closet that looks a little bit creepy. Overall we enjoyed our stay, the onsen ( go after dinner and early at 5 am) and the free massage chair!

We are a bit disappointed with our stay, given how out of the way it is. You can get here by bus, though, and the surrounding area is gorgeous! The sulphuric onsen is an interesting experience, but I felt the need to take another shower after. I took advantage of the all you can eat (and drink) buffet, but my mom didn't like the food quality. The lack of a private bath or even shower options was also disappointing. My mom also found the interior of the building to be intolerably cold, and could not sleep well as a result. This could be an option if you're looking for an affordable rustic experience.
