We checked in around 8 PM after a long day of sightseeing. As we entered, we were warmly welcomed by the front desk staff. The hostess greeted us with a welcome drink, and when we mentioned we don’t drink alcohol, she gladly offered us sparkling jasmine tea instead. That thoughtful gesture left a great first impression. She also asked if we’d like a wake-up call for the Northern Lights, expected around 1 AM — which we happily agreed to, as it was a key reason for choosing this hotel. To top it off, she upgraded us to a junior suite, which was a kind and unexpected touch. The hotel’s remote location adds to its charm, but it’s worth noting that it’s 30–45 minutes from the nearest grocery store or restaurant. Additionally, since the hotel sits on geothermal lava fields, the sulfur smell in the air can be quite strong — something to be prepared for. One night here is enough to get the full experience. We opted for room service due to the restaurant closing soon after check-in. The fish was average, and the pasta was unfortunately disappointing. Breakfast the next morning didn’t meet expectations either — limited selection, and surprisingly, cappuccinos or lattes came at an extra charge. Despite only 2–3 tables being occupied, the buffet staff felt inattentive and not nearly as warm or efficient as the check-in hostess. Overall, the hotel offers a unique experience and great views — but it’s a one-night stay kind of place
Wonderful hotel in a beautiful location with a modern Nordic (austere) design. Staff, especially the 2 young women at the front desk (Hannah, I think but my hearing is poor) were very professional, efficient and helpful. We stayed 3 nights in 2 patio rooms with views of the parking lot (minus), power plant and mountains (positive). The rooms are quite large and nice, but luggage holders would have be helpful. The patio has no chairs so I see no point in having this apparent upgrade. The hotel has a small but nice lobby, where we had complimentary coffee each morning. The hotel has a very nice hot spring fed mostly covered pool, which is very shallow (2ft), narrow (8ft) but long (40ft). Love the pool & small sauna. Inexplicably, there are no chairs or lounges outside, which was a shame on the 1 sunny day as I had to lie on the hard concrete floor. They do have a room inside with bean-bag style loungers, but it is enclosed and stuffy with no windows that open. For added amenities, they have a small but amazingly beautiful bar with huge windows and views. Finally, they have a restaurant, which I will try and review separately. Overall, I would stay again in another room and upper floor. Beware, like all of Iceland, everything is extremely expensive. I've been to 70 countries and this is the most expensive by far. This hotel booked on a third party website was way over 400USD and nearly 50USD cheaper than their own website. I always try to book directly but it didn't make sense. I notified the hotel and they would not match the price, which simply is poor business on their end, but not my concern.
Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 2 nights after being in the city! It is stunning! Don’t listen to any of the bad reviews the staff could not do enough for you! Going out of their way to make your stay wonderful! There is a smell from the geometric pool however this is not the hotels fault and it’s part of the experience for the naturally heated pool! The rooms are stunning and the bar has incredible views! We drove to the nearest town one day for food which takes about 35 minutes. We ate at the hotel as well the food is incredible as are the mocktails/cocktails! Highly recommend and we will be coming back in winter!
