First day back after a 9 day stay at Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres and we couldn't be happier with our vacation (ok, maybe two small details). We were greeted at reception and offered a delicious glass of passionfruit juice. I guess we were really thirsty and water wasn't doing it's job. Neither of us spoke Spanish but managed to understand the guest services lady who was checking us in. We booked the swim up and privileged guest. The room was in the 4th building and was beautiful the moment we walked into a nicely air conditioned room. We visited every restaurant and our favourite was Ayami Teppenyaki. Go there twice if you're able to get the reservation. Lorenzo was our chef and he was entertaining and played toss the rice ball. After each dinner, we went to the buffet for fruit or something light. We noticed that there were some messy kids at the buffet so the food crumbs were all over the fabric chairs and leather seats. BEWARE before you sit on some melted chocolate!! The buffet was exceptional. The food options were plentiful that it didn't get borrowing. Wish that instead of waiting on the breakfast lineup, privileged guests could have bi-passed. All the staff, from the maids to the bartender to the servers, were all so friendly and smiling. We especially connected with Yendy at the Aqua B and Fernanda who was the photographer. We saw them every day and they greeted us like friends. The team on the exclusive resort club were a little pushy and felt like we couldn't say no. So after a 90 minute breakfast and meeting with them, we all received complimentary massages and discounts at the stores. Nice perk but I didn't appreciate the 8am and 9 am wake up calls on the morning of the meeting - just to make sure we showed up. THUMBS DOWN. Thanks Catalonia Costa Mujeres for some amazing memories.
We had a lovely stay overall. The beach is amazing and the staff did an excellent job cleaning up seaweed the few days it was there. There was entertainment every evening which the kids enjoyed. Food was pretty good overall - my only suggestion would be to have more variety or rotation of cuisines at the buffet. We loved the lobby and the common areas to hang out in especially since we were a large group. If the pool towel service could be improved that would be great. Instead of having to carry towels back and forth to our rooms especially with little kids and strollers, it would help to have a card system for towels. There were some small issues but nothing that took away from our experience. Would recommend for a lovely beach stay.
We stayed at Catalonia Grand Costa Mujeres for four nights and five days. The resort features a modern design and was very clean. However, the overall service fell below expectations, with a few standout exceptions: • Gahel (Concierge): Exceptionally friendly and welcoming. He went above and beyond to ensure our trip got off to a great start. • Janet (Breakfast Buffet): Warm and attentive, she made our mornings more pleasant. • Israel (Concierge): Helpful and responsive whenever we needed assistance. • Freddy (Steakville): Provided excellent service and ensured our meals were cooked to perfection. While these individuals made a positive impact, the food overall did not meet the standards we’re accustomed to. We recommend booking Steakville and the Japanese restaurant, as those were the highlights. For all other meals, the Grand Caribe buffet was the most consistent option. Unfortunately, we had a poor experience upon arrival. One of the front desk staff members was rude and unhelpful when we attempted to book dinner reservations, despite repeated attempts to explain that the online system was not functioning properly. After making me reset my password three times, she reluctantly helped us book, which set a disappointing tone for the start of our stay. The spa experience was relaxing, but we were quoted one price and charged another at checkout. Basic services were also lacking—on one occasion, it took over four hours to receive washcloths, and housekeeping only left one washcloth during a room cleaning. Beach towel exchange was inconvenient, requiring a walk to the far side of the property, and towels were not refreshed daily as seen at other resorts. Additionally, the website is not user-friendly for booking or finding restaurant hours. Prior to arrival, I contacted the hotel to arrange payment and make dining reservations. Although payment was accepted, reservations were not allowed. This left us with limited options and forced us to dine at the sports bar, which was underwhelming. Lastly, we were promised two $35 massages and $600 in resort credit in exchange for attending a presentation (similar to a timeshare pitch), but those perks were never provided. In conclusion, the resort is a good choice if you’re looking for a modern, clean, and budget-friendly stay. However, if you prioritize exceptional service, seamless booking, and high-quality dining, I would recommend exploring other resorts.
